Daihoji is a Buddhist temple dedicated to DAIKOKUTEN,
patron of happiness, good returns and acquisition of properties.

The ritual of bean scattering “Mamemaki”
(まめまき or 豆まき) takes place here every year
during the “Setsubun” (節分) festivities
for the Spring Festival “haru matsuri” (春祭)
on February 3rd (Chinese New Year).
The beans (toasted soybeans) are thrown around the temple precincts to cast out demons and to welcome good luck.

After the ceremony, festival floats bearing throwers of lucky beans “fuku mame” (福 豆) are drawn through nearby streets such as Patio-dori and Juban-dori in a Mamemaki parade.
